-
- It certainly worth it. I've just done it and the difference can be
- amazing.

- >error correction, but which is better?
-
- V42 is error correction and V42bis is 'on the fly' data compression,
- similar to MNP5 but more intelligent. V34 is an internationally-accepted
- protocol for data transmission at speeds *up to* 28,800 bps. Any V34
- modem (and V32bis for that matter) ought to have V42/V42bis available.
-
- >2) How much can I expect my internet performance improve? Is a 28.8
- >double the speed of a 14.4 or is it some multiple?
-
- Theoretically the transfer speed is doubled but there are greater
- opportunities for line noise to interfere and the protocol allows for
- retrains (fallback) to lower speeds until a stable connection is
- achieved. That said, what you achieve from your Internet conenctions
- probably has more to do with the loading on the system than the speed of
- your modem. Here at Nottingham University we have a full link yet I can
- wait for ages for some connections to return to me when there are a lot
- of people on-line.

-
- I can't help here as I've not used one. They have a good reputation is as
- far as I can go. I went for a USR Courier and it's proved to be an
- excellent buy so far.
